Pedorthics

Calluses. Plantar fasciitis. Bunions. Drop foot. Hammer toe. Arthritis. Diabetes. Charcot foot. Stroke. Fractures. Injury recovery. Many people suffer from foot and ankle problems, ranging from minor issues to more severe conditions that could require surgery and hospitalization. A pedorthist joins your health-care team to treat these problems using conservative solutions such as modified footwear and other pedorthic devices, including orthotics.

As credentialed pedorthists, our goal at Orthotics in Motion is to provide the relief and stability to keep you moving. We look at the big picture of how your footwear—your shoes and any orthoses or other devices—can be optimized to correct medical conditions, relieve pressure, redistribute weight, and prevent further damage. We help patients select and modify footwear, taking lifestyle, occupation, sports and activities into consideration along with the medical factors.

Our recommended solutions become an integrated part of the regimen provided by your doctor or physical therapist. We take great pride in being an active member of your rehabilitation or health-care team.

The Custom Foot Orthotics Process

When your provider writes you a prescription for orthotics, it’s time to move beyond any prefabricated inserts you might have tried from the pharmacy or shoe store. Working from your prescription, our team can fabricate an appropriate orthosis and fit the device to you in a way that allows your orthosis to achieve the doctor's desired result.

Here is a quick overview of the process you will experience at Orthotics in Motion as we create your customized or custom-made foot orthotic device.

1.
Foot Evaluation

A thorough assessment that includes your medical history, previous injuries, lifestyle and activities, and current pain and discomfort. We take measurements of your toes, feet, arch height, ankles, and lower legs and examine your balance and gait. At this point, we can discuss recommendations for the best footwear and orthoses for your condition.

2.
Foot Impression

The next step is to make a mold of your foot. We first take an impression to capture the complete plantar foot anatomy. From that imprint, we create a physical reproduction of your foot by pouring a fast-drying liquid plaster into the impression. Our experts then file and sand the plaster to match your foot’s exact proportions and details.

3.
Vacuum Forming

The process of applying layers of temperature-sensitive plastic or EVA rubber material onto a vacuum former. The vacuum causes the materials to form around the plaster foot mold, creating a base of the precise density and thickness for your orthosis.

4.
Trimming and Correcting

The phase in which your orthosis is carefully prepared to fit your feet and shoes. Our skilled pedorthist trims and grinds away all excess material, then shapes and adjusts the orthosis to provide support, comfort, or cushioning exactly where you need it.

5.
Final Fitting

We fit the orthosis into your specific shoe. You try them on at our office and provide feedback on the fit and function. If adjustments are needed, we will make them and try again until the result is a completely comfortable, effective combination of orthosis and footwear.
